WELCOME to Indivisible Scarborough! We are part of a national, non-violent, grassroots movement of thousands of local Indivisible groups with a mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy and defeat the Trump agenda. We:

• Participate in rallies in opposition to the awfulness going on in our country right now.

• Write letters, postcards and emails to our Federal, state and local elected officials supporting legislation that meets our goals and opposing legislation that does not.

• Support candidates at all levels of government who share our values.

• Write letters-to-the-editor.

As we head toward the Midterm election on November 3, there is a lot of fear that the current Administration will do whatever they can to distort the results in their favor, and create doubt about the validity of any result they don’t like. Nationalizing and sending in National Guard troops, or ICE agents, or passing the SAVE Act, or limiting how the Postal Service delivers mail-in ballots, and striking individuals off registered voter rolls, have all been in the news.

In such a chaotic and uncertain environment, what can YOU do?

 

First, know that your state and local officials are working as hard as they can

to protect the Midterm election from outside interference

 

Gov. Mills, Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and their staffs have made protecting the Midterms their highest priority. The ACLU of Maine, League of Women Voters of Maine and other similar organizations are hard at work, too. Every possible pre-emptive action, and every possible responsive action, are being considered and developed should they be needed. These include National Guard deployment, legal actions, safekeeping of ballots both before and after they are filled out, training of poll workers and Town Clerks across Maine, and day-of poll monitoring programs with call-in hotlines, to name just a few. No stone is being left unturned.

 

Second, know that DESPITE claims by the current Administration, “voter fraud”

is absolutely NOT a problem in Maine or across the country, and therefore

is NOT a legitimate reason for outside interference

 

Here is what our Senator Angus King said in a recent editorial in the Bangor Daily News:

 

“Last year… the right-leaning Heritage Foundation updated its database of voter fraud by state between 1982 and 2025. After laboring mightily, they pinpointed 1,620 cases in the entire country during the last 44 years out of a total of more than 2 billion votes cast. And how many of those cases involved undocumented immigrants trying to vote? Ninety-nine. You read that right, 99 out of 2 billion. (Those odds — 99/2,000,000,000 — are three orders of magnitude longer than the National Weather Service’s estimated 1/15,300 odds of being struck by lightning at some point during an 80-year lifespan.)

 

“Let’s look at my state of Maine. We have Election Day registration, no voter ID, no-excuse absentee voting, voting by mail, and drop boxes — in other words, all the voter fraud bogeymen. The Heritage study found two cases of confirmed voter fraud there in the past 44 years, neither of which involved illegal immigrants. Give me a break!”

 

Third, and this is the most important, Vote Early

 

There are several ways you can do this:

​

a. Make sure you are registered to vote. To learn if you are currently registered, call your Town Clerk and ask. Registration requires proof you are a US citizen; that you are a resident of the Town in which you wish to register; and that you are at least 18 years of age. If you are NOT registered, you can use this form.

​

b. Request an Absentee Ballot. When you receive it, fill it out properly and either mail it, or deliver it to your Town Clerk. Absentee Ballots require no specific reason, may be requested in 2 ways, and will be mailed to you about 30 days before the election:

i. Follow this link to the Maine Secretary of State's office.

ii. From the Town of Scarborough. By phone, Scarborough residents may call the Town Clerk's Office at (207) 730-4020. By mail, complete the fillable PDF application and submit it to the Town Clerk’s Office to have an absentee ballot mailed to you. You may also use this form if an immediate family member wishes to submit the ballot order on your behalf, or if you wish to designate a third person to pick up a ballot for you.

 

c. Simply vote early in person. Once ballots are printed (about 30 days before November 3), any Scarborough resident can walk into Town Hall, ask for a ballot, and vote right then and there. You can also register to vote if you have not done so. You will be given an absentee ballot, and complete instructions on how to properly use it, and can give your completed ballot to a person in the Town Clerk’s office.

 

Fourth, help Indivisible Scarborough by writing “please vote” postcards to local,

registered Democrat and Unaffiliated voters who did NOT vote in 2024

 

Through Indivisible’s access to the Voter Activation Network (VAN), we have secured the names and addresses of 1,000 such voters. Most of these voters are right here in Scarborough, and others are in nearby Cumberland County towns. We will be writing postcards at our Monthly Meetings on Wednesday August 26; Wednesday September 16, and (if needed) Wednesday October 21. Come join us – and there will be cookies! Fifth, consider volunteering to support free, fair, and accurate elections

on and before election day, November 3.

​

a. League of Women Voters of Maine has a number of volunteering opportunities:

i. Distribute Voter Guides, sing up for training Here

iii. Be an Election Volunteer

b. ACLU of Maine also has several volunteer programs to protect our elections:

And Sixth, continue attending local rallies and vigils to keep up the pressure

on the current Administration!

Did you know there is an ICE processing facility in Scarborough?

We are protesting every Friday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Route One in Scarborough. This is several blocks from the ICE facility in Scarborough. Join us with your posters so we can educate Route 1 passersby on what's happening in our community and possibly let immigrants and some ICE agents see that we aren’t happy about having ICE in Scarborough. Please do not park at Holy Donut or Hospice of Southern Maine (now called Andwell Health). Instead, park on the right shoulder of Lincoln Avenue opposite The Holy Donut, just beyond where the guardrail stops. Staying safe is very important (see above), and some of us wear balaclavas with the words “NO ICE”. Signs may be available on site or feel free to bring your own. Indivisible Scarborough is co-sponsoring this weekly event with ITSME.

Indivisible South Portland Weekly Rally

​

Join us on Saturdays from 11:00 am to noon at Erskine Park, at Broadway & Waterman Drive in South Portland by the traffic light nearest the Casco Bay Bridge. This is the easiest access rally in our area for people with walkers, wheelchairs, or other physical challenges. There is free parking near Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks or in shopping center behind. Indivisible Portland Weekly Rally

 

This is the largest public event in our area. Join their weekly rally on Saturdays from 11:00 am to noon at Monument Square, on the corner of Congress Street & Preble Street in Portland. Parking can be a challenge and is expensive! Click here for more information about this rally.​​​

Biddeford Multifaith Community Vigils: from 5:30 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday August 18 and Tuesday August 25 (and likely beyond), at Mechanics Park on the corner of Main and Water Streets in Biddeford. Vigils will be led by different Local MultiFaith Leaders in Biddeford/Saco. These are prayerful gatherings of Love, Solidarity and Support for the Biddeford community, especially Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero’s family and friends, our Immigrant Neighbors, all those who feel unsafe, and all caught up in the systems of injustice and division. All are welcome, no religious or spiritual affiliation is necessary. No signs are needed.
